Summary:
Knowva has transitioned away from using YouTube for its in-app video content to ensure a completely ad-free, distraction-free learning environment for children. By hosting videos on a dedicated content delivery network, Knowva eliminates ads, tracking, and unrelated video recommendations, enhancing focus and safety for young learners. This change supports Knowva's commitment to providing a high-quality educational experience without commercial pressures, relying on subscriptions and contributions for sustainability. The YouTube channel will continue to share content outside the app for convenience.

So, here's the thing. From the beginning, we wanted Knowva to be completely ad free whilst offering the best multimedia experience for kids who want to learn. It was a lofty goal, but one we believed was extremely important to Knowva and you - the people using it. So we excluded pop-ups. Vetoed tracking. Abolished disruptive design patterns.
We were already almost there - but there was one big exception that had proven to be a bit of a challenge to overcome, one 'open door' that we needed to close to stop the ads completely.
YouTube.
The YouTube Problem

We love YouTube. It's such a clever bit of technology and it's truly changed the world. It's also immediately recognisable, which is super helpful - that Red Play Button and Player scream video.
But it's also not the best place for kids.
Even when a channel is set up with care, as ours is, it is not possible to reliably prevent pre-roll or in-roll adverts from appearing, especially as policies and ad formats change over time (unless you pay, of course).
Ads can appear before a video starts, interrupt it part way through, or be introduced without warning. And we can't control who logs the data on those ads. For a child who simply wants an answer to a question, these interruptions are confusing at best and frustrating at worst.
But there is also the issue of recommended content. Once a video ends, children are often shown suggestions that are driven by algorithms rather than educational quality or age suitability. These recommendations can quickly pull them away from the original topic and into content that parents did not intend them to watch.
Even with supervision, it becomes harder to maintain clear boundaries between safe learning material and the wider platform.
Despite YouTube being the market leader for online video, it wasn't the right choice when aiming for an ad-free platform. We just couldn't stop the chance of an ad appearing.
This lack of control is one of the key reasons we chose to move away from YouTube for the in-app video experience entirely.
Our Solution

So - from now on - you and your family won't see YouTube videos inside the Knowva App or Knowva's Free Trial. The videos will still be there, of course - and we'll still be adding more in the future. But that open door to YouTube is now firmly closed.
This change was made possible by moving our video hosting to a professional CDN, or content delivery network.
We now have Knowva's videos (and a few other surprises that we've not yet announced!) living on their own server, nice and safely, with no ads, no tracking, no follow on videos. Just Knowva. Just for you.
The result is a cleaner, safer experience for every child who uses Knowva.
Why ad free matters for children
Fewer distractions, better focus
Adverts are designed to interrupt. Even when they are child-friendly, they pull attention away from learning and break concentration. On Knowva, children can now watch videos, read articles, and explore topics without anything competing for their focus.
This is especially important for younger learners, who benefit from clear layouts and predictable experiences. When nothing flashes, pops up, or plays unexpectedly, children can stay engaged for longer and absorb more of what they are learning.
No commercial pressure
Children should not be treated as an audience to be sold to. An ad free platform means no hidden messages, no persuasive tactics, and no pressure to want things that have nothing to do with learning.
Everything on Knowva exists for one reason only: to help children understand the world. That principle is now fully reflected in the way the platform works.
No third-party tracking
Many advertising systems rely on tracking user behaviour to decide what to show next. By removing ads entirely, Knowva also removes the need for those systems.
We do not build profiles of children’s behaviour to sell attention to advertisers - and we never will. We are committed to privacy, safety, and transparency for families.
Better performance
Faster loading, fewer interruptions
I won't bore you too much with the technicalities here, but...
Our content delivery network is designed to deliver media quickly and reliably. It's also ours - just for Knowva users - and not shared with the rest of the internet.
Videos load faster, play more smoothly, and are far less likely to buffer or stall. This is especially helpful on shared home internet connections or older devices.
For children, this means less waiting and less frustration. For parents and carers, it means fewer technical hiccups during learning time.
Built to grow with Knowva
Using a proper CDN allows us to expand Knowva’s video library without compromising quality. As we add more topics, explainers, and read-along content, the platform is ready to handle it.
This investment is about the long term. It ensures Knowva remains reliable as it grows.
How Knowva stays sustainable without ads
Knowva is supported by families who value safe, high-quality learning. Your subscriptions allow us to keep the platform ad free while continuing to improve it.
This model keeps our priorities clear. We work for learners and their grown-ups, not advertisers.
What About Your YouTube Channel?
Well, simply - we're not killing our YouTube Channel - far from it!
We'll continue to use it to share content outside the app, so things can remain super convenient for parents. Rest assured that our channel is set to 'Made for Kids' - so you won't see comments under our videos, for example, but you can share them to another parent if you'd like.
A better kind of screen time
Removing ads is not just a technical change. It is a statement about what Knowva stands for. Calm exploration. Clear explanations. Safe, distraction free learning.
Thank you for supporting Knowva (or if you got this far, and aren't already subscribed - check out our shop and grab a subscription!) and helping us build a better place for children to learn online.
